People of African Descent leadership Summit
The People of African Descent Leadership Summit was held Monday September 28, 2015 at The National Black Theater in Harlem USA as the meetings of the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) are taking place in New York..
The keynote address was delivered by President Nicolas Maduro of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Before speaking to an audience President Maduro met privately with a group of Union Leaders.
The Venezuelan President was quoted as saying “Presidents cannot get used to being alone among elites, when given a choice; we chose to come to Harlem, and the Bronx.”
President Maduro also said “We suffered with you,” as he made reference to Ferguson, Missouri, where Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot and killed on Aug. 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer.
President Maduro was introduced by Actor/ Activist and Chairman of the Trans Africa Forum, Danny Glover.
The meeting was convened by The Institute of the Black World, 21st Century & moderated by its President, Dr. Ron Daniels and sponsored by SEIU 1199.
A few of the distinguished speakers and attendees in the house were Senator Bill Perkins of Manhattan, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, professor of Black Studies at the City College of New York, Brooklyn Assemblyman Charles Barron, Reverend Dennis Dillon, Senior Pastor, Brooklyn Christian Center, Minister Hafeez Muhammad, Muhammad's Mosque #9 the Nation of Islam, & Opal Tometi, Co-Founder # Black Lives Matter.
